Maybe this will make up for the entire city's police force walking out on the job just after the hurricane hit.

Personally, NO is a lost cause. Bury it and rebuild inland. If things keep going the way they're going, Katrina will happen again!

i say if there is no way to salvage the historical parts of the city, turn it into an "Escape From New York" sort of place and write it off...

hey hey hey there you two! I take a bit of offense (ok...ALOT) at that attitude. How about let's just let CA fall off the earth in the next earthquake, or better yet, let's not put out those fires that flame up every year!
It's attitudes like this that is hindering the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast. It is NOT the fault of the folks that live there that a MONSTER hurricane came ashore or that the COE didn't build the levies good enough. Of course, there is alot that the citizens and government could do to help, but bury it and rebuild inland!?!?!?!? Have you lost your mind? What if that attitude had happened to NY after 9/11? And for the record, the ENTIRE police force did not walk out. Only about 100 folks and they got theirs for their actions. PLEASE get your facts straight before spouting off, mkay?
Sorry, but I have no use for attitudes like this when I know of too many good people who are struggling to just rebuild their houses and lives, much less their city after what happened to them. In fact, I can say openly and honestly, cuz we're all friends here right? that attitudes like this really PISS.ME.OFF.
There is just too much hardship and heartbreak down here to think this way.
Think of your own natural disasters. Wouldn't you want the help and heartfelt empathy of your fellow Americans? Most of the folks that are working hard down here to rebuild their lives and towns, you will never hear about. Why? because it's not a good news story.
Jeez, with friends like you, who needs enemies?

No offense intended Jules, honey. I just see no reason to build it back again when it's below water line. That's the difference between NY and California and N.O. NY and Cali are above the water level.

Now, if we could build N.O. with a nice huge retaining wall that will be maintained from now on, unlike the last one was, fine.

But most likely it won't. Most likely rebuilding N.O. in that bowl again, where the only thing keeping the Gulf from flooding it out once more is a tiny levee that is never watched or maintained or reinforced like the last one, will only result in yet another disaster killing so many more people.

It's a city. Why are you upset as you are. We're not talking about something miraculous or out of this world spectacular. It's a city. Concrete and brick. Sure, it's got a history and legends and all that, but so does everywhere else. Why are you as upset with us as you are, calling us enemies?

It's NOT just a city, bricks and concrete. It's lives, and loves, and hopes and dreams shattered.

I guess I would just want to rebuild my life somewhere I knew my family would be safe... I am not much of a gambler, it seems... I didn't mean to sound heartless, Jules...
